What is Pediatric Speech-Language Pathology?

Pediatric Speech-Language Pathology supports children who experience challenges with communication, speech, language, social interaction, feeding or swallowing.

Speech-Language Pathologists assess not only how a child speaks, but also how they understand language, express their thoughts and needs, interact with others and participate in everyday activities.

Depending on your child’s needs, an SLP may support:

  • Speech sounds & articulation – producing sounds clearly and being understood by others
  • Expressive language – using words, sentences and other forms of communication to express thoughts, wants and needs
  • Receptive language – understanding words, questions, directions and conversations
  • Social communication – developing communication skills for interaction, connection and participation with others
  • Fluency – supporting children who stutter or experience other differences in the flow of speech
  • Voice – addressing concerns related to vocal quality, pitch, volume or use
  • Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC) – supporting children who communicate using pictures, communication devices, gestures or other methods
  • Early communication development – building foundational interaction, play, imitation and communication skills
  • Feeding and swallowing – assessing and supporting oral-motor skills, safe swallowing and participation in eating and mealtimes
  • Pre-literacy and literacy-related language skills – supporting the language foundations needed for reading, writing and learning

Children do not need a formal diagnosis to access Speech-Language Pathology services.

Our services

Assessments

Every child communicates differently. Our assessment process helps us understand your child’s individual strengths, challenges and communication needs. Depending on the reason for referral, assessment may include:

  • Parent or caregiver interview
  • Developmental and communication history
  • Play-based clinical observation
  • Speech sound assessment
  • Receptive and expressive language assessment
  • Social communication assessment
  • Oral-motor assessment
  • Feeding and swallowing assessment, when appropriate
  • AAC and communication needs assessment
  • Standardized testing, when appropriate
  • Collaboration with teachers, caregivers and other healthcare professionals
  • Written reports and individualized recommendations, when required

Following the assessment, your SLP will discuss the findings with you and recommend next steps based on your child’s individual needs and your family’s priorities.

Individual Therapy

Individual SLP sessions provide personalized support based on your child’s goals.

Sessions are designed to be engaging, developmentally appropriate and meaningful to your child. For younger children, this often means learning through play and everyday interactions rather than sitting at a table completing repetitive exercises. Therapy may address areas such as:

  • Speech sound development and intelligibility
  • Understanding and using language
  • Early communication
  • Social communication
  • AAC
  • Fluency
  • Feeding and oral-motor development
  • Functional communication at home, school and in the community

Parents and caregivers are an important part of therapy. Your SLP can provide practical strategies that can be incorporated into everyday routines so communication development continues beyond the therapy session.

Collaborative OT + SLP Services

Sometimes communication cannot be addressed in isolation. A child’s ability to communicate, eat, play, learn and participate can be influenced by multiple factors—including sensory processing, emotional regulation, motor skills, attention, executive functioning and oral-motor development. Infinity Health offers collaborative Occupational Therapy and Speech-Language Pathology services for children who would benefit from an interdisciplinary approach.

Depending on your child’s needs, an OT and SLP may work together to address areas such as:

  • Feeding and mealtime participation
  • Sensory regulation and communication
  • Social participation and play
  • AAC access and functional use
  • Motor planning and speech participation
  • Attention, regulation and engagement during communication
  • School participation
  • Daily routines and independence
  • Complex developmental needs

Joint OT/SLP sessions allow both therapists to observe and support the child at the same time, helping the team develop coordinated strategies rather than treating individual challenges separately. Families may receive individual OT or SLP services, collaborative sessions, or a combination depending on their child’s needs.

Group Programs

Infinity Health may offer SLP and OT pediatric groups based on community needs, age, ability and clinician availability. Programs may focus on areas such as:

  • Early communication
  • Social communication
  • School readiness
  • Play and interaction
  • Communication and emotional regulation
  • Feeding and food exploration
  • Parent and caregiver education

Parent & Caregiver Coaching

Some of the most meaningful opportunities for communication development happen during everyday routines. Our SLPs work with parents and caregivers to build practical strategies into activities your family is already doing—playing, getting dressed, eating meals, reading books, going to the playground or getting ready for bed. Parent coaching may be incorporated into your child’s sessions or offered separately in person or virtually.

Our goal is for families to leave therapy feeling informed, confident and equipped with strategies they can realistically use at home.

Professional Development & Education Workshops

Our Speech-Language Pathologists can provide evidence-informed education and professional development for educators, daycare providers, healthcare professionals, community organizations and families. Topics may include:

  • Supporting early language development
  • Recognizing speech and language delays
  • Building communication through play
  • Supporting neurodivergent communicators
  • AAC and inclusive communication
  • Social communication
  • Feeding and oral-motor development
  • Communication strategies for classrooms and daycares
  • Supporting communication through regulation and sensory-informed approaches

Workshops can be customized to meet the needs of your organization or community.

Why Choose Infinity Health?

Children don’t experience communication, movement, regulation, learning and daily life as separate systems—and neither should their care. Infinity Health’s multidisciplinary approach allows our Speech-Language Pathologists to collaborate with Occupational Therapists and other healthcare professionals when children have needs that cross traditional clinical boundaries.

We focus on practical, individualized care that helps children build skills they can use in the places that matter most: at home, at school, with friends and in their communities.

Our goal isn’t simply to help children perform skills during therapy. It’s to help them communicate, connect and participate more fully in everyday life.
