QuickStart

Empowering Metro Vancouver teens to achieve independence and success.

Helping Your Youth Achieve Success

Progressing the Adolescent Population towards Independence

There is a growing group of students that do not enter secondary education or a skilled trade following high school. For this group, there are no more teachers or report cards and often parents trust their children are doing the right things to move forward in life. However, some of these adolescents struggle with attaining progressive means of gainful employment, financial stability, and a plan for independent living. Often, they can be feeling lost about their post-graduation plans and may spend their time in unhealthy realms or unproductive activities.

Our QuickStart Program is here to help unlock their potential and pave the way to independence and stability.

Our program is based on current research:

Average or underachieving teenagers in British Columbia face various challenges nowadays, including higher rates of unplanned pregnancy, increased suicide rates, mental health issues, involvement in gangs, and ultimately a decreased quality of life (Dishion et al., 2005; Roos et al., 2014; Zandy et al., 2019).

There are multiple personal and environmental factors that contribute to the success of average or underachieving teenagers. These factors include having life goals (Peterson, 2001), possessing strong social skills/support networks (Tuzova & Kobzeva, 2023), as well as maintaining a healthy lifestyle (Faught et al., 2017), which are typical scopes of occupational therapy intervention.

Utilizing the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO), the QuickStart program aims to improve the subjective quality of life of participants by helping them set meaningful life goals, understand the factors that hinder them from achieving those goals, and develop strategies to overcome the obstacles.

We are here to help develop routine, daily structure, positive work habits and set small, short-term goals that can grow into larger productive lifestyles. If your child does not benefit from our program, we can at the least provide you with a list of barriers and recommendations to address the issues at hand.

What We Offer

Our program is delivered by a team of Healthcare Professionals (HCP) (Occupational Therapists, Social Workers, Counselors and Vocational Experts) who utilize evidence-based approaches. We aim to empower your teen to seize control of their future and lead a productive style. Through personalized sessions with our experienced professionals, your teen will:

  • Clarify Life Goals: Explore their interests, values, and aspirations to define clear and meaningful goals.
  • Develop Action Plans: Create step-by-step plans to reach their goals, identifying potential barriers and strategies to overcome them.
  • Build Life Skills: Learn essential skills such as stress management, organization, financial independence, problem-solving, decision-making, and effective communication to support their journey towards success.
  • Examine and Improve their Lifestyle: Gain insight into their sleep habits, daily routine, and their impact on health, and receive suggestions for improvement.
  • Gain Confidence: Develop a strong sense of self-confidence and belief in their ability to overcome challenges and achieve their dreams.

How It Works

Our program typically lasts for 2-3 months, consisting of weekly personalized sessions tailored to your teen’s unique needs and goals:
  1. Intake and Assessment:
    • We will discuss your teen’s aspirations in career/education, interpersonal relationships, and future living conditions.
    • We will also assess their values, interests, daily routines, mental health, and social relationships using standardized questionnaires and structured interviews
  2. Parent Meeting
    • A goal-setting meeting will be scheduled after the assessment to ensure you agree with the goals and will support them in the process.
  3. Intervention
    • Weekly sessions (in-person/virtual) are scheduled, during which our healthcare professionals (HCPs) will identify challenges and barriers to achieving those goals and prepare a feasible action plan.
    • We will provide necessary skills and encourage them to achieve their goals
    • HCPs will also encourage them to adopt healthier lifestyle habits.
    • Our vocational rehabilitation services will assist with the steps required for securing short-term employment and a long-term employment goal.
  4. Updates to Parent
    • Monthly updates in the form of report card will be provided
    • Our HCPs will call you every two weeks to check in and ensure there is tangible progress
    • At the end of the program, there will be an in-person meeting to review progress and provide suggestions for next steps.
